The thing that I like most about this book is that it is real and raw. The author shares candidly on her own struggles with doing the things that she knew she needed to do in order to turn her life around.

This seemingly eternal battle between knowing and doing is something that we all share as imperfect humans.

If you ever find yourself desiring yet struggling to change an aspect of your life, like the foods that you eat, the amount of alcohol that you drink, the time of day that you get up, the conversations that you are avoiding…really ANY ASPECT OF YOUR BEHAVIOUR, then this book can help you to get on the right path, and reclaim control of your brain.

The good news is that it is really very simple to begin to turn your life around. You just need to train yourself to take yourself seriously, and that is as simple as saying 5,4,3,2,1, GO!

E.g. You know you need to get up earlier so that you can get properly prepared for an amazing day, yet you are in a pattern of hitting the snooze button 3 or 4 times each morning, wasting 20-30 minutes of valuable time. Tomorrow morning, instead of hitting the snooze button, say to yourself, mentally, 5,4,3,2,1 then hit the stop button and immediately get out of bed.

It might sound too good to be true, but you will have to find that out by testing it in the real world or YOUR world. That is the only way you know how anything truly works, right? You test it out. So before you dismiss it as being too daft and too simple, maybe consider that simplicity is exactly what is needed in an increasingly complex world in order to get ahead.

In the middle section of the book, Mel describes some of the science behind why this method works, and why it is so versatile, with the promise of helping you to transform everything in your life. It turns out that there is a lot of strong neuroscience research showing clearly that your pre-frontal cortex can literally hijack your mind and hold you hostage, wasting enormous amounts of time, keeping you stuck! The 5-second rule is a brilliantly simple and effective way of regaining control of your mind, and your life.
