At SpineCentral, we often encounter clients who, during their consultation, mention suffering from severe leg cramps and seek understanding and relief from this discomfort. While leg cramps might not be the primary reason people seek out care, they are certainly an issue we can address alongside spinal health concerns.

As practitioners of the Advanced Biostructural Correction (ABC™) method, we are trained to recognise various health conditions and understand when it’s appropriate to co-manage cases with other medical specialists. In situations where leg cramps accompany back pain, our approach is holistic—addressing not just the spine but also circulatory issues that might require additional expertise, such as cardiology.

At SpineCentral, we prioritise immediate, safe treatment to improve your overall well-being without delay. As they say, “The best time to start something new is now,” not under so-called perfect conditions. This proactive approach also includes educating our clients about the root causes of leg cramps, such as:

  • Dehydration: Inadequate fluid intake can upset the balance of crucial electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium, impairing muscle function and leading to cramps.
  • Nerve Compression: This can often present symptoms similar to cramps but is due to issues like spinal stenosis or a herniated disc. A comprehensive check is necessary to accurately diagnose and treat this condition.
  • Muscle Overuse: New or intense exercise can lead to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which, while normal, can be mistaken for cramping.
  • Poor Circulation: Conditions like peripheral arterial disease require careful attention and referral to a specialist. If this is occurring with you, we will pick it up on the consultation/examination process and arrange an appropriate referral for you.
  • Diabetes: Glucose imbalances can affect peripheral nerves, leading to cramping.
  • Pregnancy: Common in later stages, this can be addressed with appropriate care and monitoring.
  • Wrong mattress/Pillow: Your sleeping environment is really important to good body function. When you sleep, you are not dead, in fact, your brain is still subconsciously assessing your environment, and if your body is unable to get into a perfectly restful position (thanks to the wrong mattress/pillow), you can develop twists/tensions in your structural system that result in unnecessary cramps or restless legs at night.

To alleviate leg cramps, consider these methods:

  • Hydration: Drink at least a litre of water daily to maintain hydration.
  • Electrolytes: Opt for sugar-free electrolyte supplements to balance body fluids.
  • Compression Socks: These can enhance blood flow and recovery, especially useful for active individuals.
  • Heat Application: A hot water bottle on the calves while resting can improve circulation and reduce cramp frequency.
  • Regular Exercise: Health is very much a use-it-or-lose-it game. It is important to exercise regularly to keep your musculoskeletal system functioning normally. Exercise may well be the only panacea treatment available. Make it a goal to move a bit each day—a 20-30 minute walk is sufficient.
  • Firmer mattress and the ABC™ pillow: Make sure that you are not sleeping on a marshmallow for a mattress. It is amazing how often we discover that one of the major unlying causes of a patient’s back pain is an insufficiently supportive mattress. We have plenty of advice on the Sleeping Well page of our website). Without proper support, your structure can go into a significantly ‘locking’ pattern overnight, putting excess stress and strain on your muscular system.

At SpineCentral, we are dedicated to treating your symptoms and educating and empowering you to understand your body’s signals, as well as how your body works like a machine. Once you get a firm grasp of that you are far better able to look after your health at home. If you or someone you know is struggling with leg cramps or other related symptoms, please reach out to us. We also offer a complimentary 15-minute discovery call to talk through your symptoms and determine if we are a good fit for your structural healthcare needs.
